Laying claim to being the "original calzone company," Penny Haley and her son Dan (hence D.P.) opened their first D.P. Dough back in 1987 in Amherst, Massachusetts. Today that venture has grown into a chain that operates mostly in the Northeast and Midwest, usually in college towns, because students love pizza -- so why not the pizza alternative? So far, Colorado is the sole Western state that dishes out D.P. Dough's massive calzones; Fort Collins, Boulder and Greeley each have an outpost, and the Denver location opened on East Colfax in 2010. All D.P. Dough locations offer the same lineup of over forty "zones" that each sell for $6.50, everything from the Buffer Zone (breaded chicken, blue cheese, mozzarella and hot sauce) to the Party Zone (hamburger, pepperoni, mozzarella, peppers, onions and cheddar). And if you can't find anything that suits your fancy from that list, you can create your own zone for dine-in, takeout or delivery.
