At New Saigon Bakery and Deli, an offshoot of one of Denver’s oldest Vietnamese restaurants (located right next door), you can't let the aroma of fresh baked bread or the fortress of stacked French cookie cartons and bulk bins holding bundles of jerky, nests of dried shrimp and sticky piles of jelly candies distract you. Instead, head straight for the cash register and place your order before the most popular menu items sell out. While banh mi – Vietnamese sandwiches stuffed with exotic herbs, marinated vegetables and your choice of familiar or exotic pork, beef, chicken or fish – is the star attraction, a variety of spring rolls, salads and rice-flour dumplings are also available. We always grab a green pandan waffle for the drive home, along with a rainbow-hued boba smoothie or some refreshingly sweet-tart, fresh-squeezed sugarcane juice.
