The Ogden Theatre has never cultivated the aesthetic appeal of its movie-theater-turned-music-venue counterparts; a lack of atmosphere may be its most defining characteristic. But the large venue hosts some of the finest touring acts on the highway, so all is forgiven. Local heavy metal and hip-hop acts are also showcased in the Capitol Hill club.

    I live just a few blocks from the Ogden, and let me just say that it has changed (in a good way) over the years. My friends and I used to commute down to Denver from the mountains in the mid 90's for punk shows at the Ogden and Fillmore (then, the Mammoth Events Center), and E. Colfax was preeeeeety sketchy back then. As the neighborhood has evolved, so has the venue. The great thing about the Ogden is that it's small enough to remain intimate, so for bands who haven't grown enough to necessitate a venue the size of the Fillmore -- usually bands who are on the brink of being big, or bands who are niche enough to never need a huge venue -- it's the perfect size. In recent years, two shows stand out for me: Bloc Party and The Sounds (a bunch of us took a retrofitted school bus filled with kegs from Boulder--it was a blast).
