Climax Lounge celebrated its fortieth birthday in 2011, proving that time flies when you’re having fun. The joint has a colorful past: In the '90s, as the Raven, it hosted punk-rock acts; the Fray and M. Ward have played there. Today it’s one of Denver’s finest black-box live-music venues, showcasing bands that span the spectrum from rock to jazz to punk, and there’s a killer vintage video arcade in the back where video-game freaks can blister their thumbs to their hearts' content with the selection of early- to mid-1980s games like Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, Centipede, Galaga, Qiz, Tempest, Gorf and Tron for a quarter a play. The Climax also is home to one of the city’s only competitive pinball competitions. Between the music, the video games and the booze, we’re frankly not sure why you’d ever want to leave.
