The name Thunder & Buttons is legendary around Colorado Springs. This bar and grill is named for the two trained elk that pulled local eccentric John “Prairie Dog” O'Byrne around town in the late 1800s. O'Byrne must have turned some heads back in the day, but today Thunder & Buttons is an institution, a neighborhood spot with a touch of the Old West still kicking around. Though burgers and beers have been served under the name since 1978, this spot on West Colorado Avenue has undergone a slick menu makeover. The elk chili is still here, alongside a buffalo burger with cabernet-sautéed mushrooms and falafel sliders. Few, if any, elk are racing up the street these days, but at least there's a little bit of quirk in Colorado Springs.
