Chop Chop probably got a boost in popularity recently when the band's song "Play" was featured in an episode of How I Met Your Mother. However, principals Catherine Cavanagh and Christy Cheng had already been veterans of the underground scene in Los Angeles. Early on, their glitchy indie-pop sound drew immediate comparisons to Ladytron. But Cavanagh and Cheng don't sound like they were going for that sort of thing, and the inherent sense of humor in their art can partly be seen on their website with the online Chop Chop video game, in which you can "chop chop some bears and plates and other fun objects." Oh, my. Touring in support of 2011's The Spark, Chop Chop has taken an artistic leap forward, with richer, more lush soundscaping and darker undertones.
