On Friday, May 20, milehighhouse's Tom Hoch takes up residency in the Jazz Bar at Serengeti (1037 Broadway). Hoch will be joined by DJs Matt Bandy and John Nedza for a brand-new night dubbed the Community; in coming weeks, Hoch and company will host the likes of Gruv Gvnrs, Paul Leath, Pure Substance's Tony Estrada, Season Recordings' Jamie Thinnes and Rick Preston. Also on May 20, White Girl Lust (DJs Eric Kozak and Clay Meador) brings its party to the adjacent Milk Bar in Serengeti's basement. Just five bucks will get you into both spots.
The Denver 3 crew -- Michael Trundle, Tyler Jacobson and Tim Cook -- are launching a new night, too. On Saturday, May 28, the threesome, along with DJ Tower, will take up residency at 2101 (2101 Champa Street) for a weekly party called Softcore. The stint at 2101 is in addition to Lipgloss, the insanely popular party that the DJs helm at La Rumba (99 West Ninth Avenue) every Friday night.
On the live-music front, Bender's Tavern (314 East 13th Avenue) is home to a new Sunday-night acoustic jam. Hosted by Chris K, a founding member of Hapi Skratch Entertainment who's been performing since before the Last Supper, the weekly event kicked off on May 1 and is slated to take place every Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. Sounds like fun for kids of all ages -- as long as those ages are 21 and up. But there's also good news for young music fans: The hi-dive (7 South Broadway) has obtained the necessary licensing to start allowing the not-ready-for-prime-time crowd into the fold. On Tuesday, June 7, Glass Candy and the Shattered Theatre, Mannequin Makeout and the Hot House are scheduled to appear at the first all-ages show.
Some bad news from the Buffalo Rose: Manager/bartender Martin Karsten was killed late Monday, May 9, or early on the morning of May 10 by a hit-and-run driver going the wrong way on Sixth Avenue in a white car or truck. And finally, many music lovers knew police officer Donald Young, who was shot to death May 8, from his time working door security at Lincoln's Roadhouse.
