Over the past few years, DJ Lee Coombs has emerged as one of the innovators and champions of tech-funk, a sound that fuses elements of techno and acid house to the snappy dance-floor kick of breakbeat. An ever-evolving sound, tech-funk is an accessible blend that takes the funky, earthy sensibilities of breakbeat and fuses it with the more abstract, trippy and purely electronic timbres associated with acid house, electro and techno. With a healthy irreverence toward the stylistic boundaries of dance music that have at times been inflexible, Coombs has built a prolific career as a producer, remixer and world-class DJ who's played everywhere from U.K. super clubs to Nevada's Black Rock desert during the Burning Man festival. His recorded work ranges from floor-filling club anthems to the more chilled-out work found on his forthcoming artist album. If he can pull off a record that works as well in the bedroom as his earlier material works on the dance floor, Coombs may well be the next crossover act to emerge from the underground.
