Localized: Mike Marchant prefers SoBro to LoDo and New Belgium to Coors
Just months after launching his bi-monthly songwriter's workshop at the Meadowlark, Mike Marchant is already pleased as punch with the response the night has gotten.
"It's going really well, and it's a lot of fun," he notes of the gathering, which takes place on the first and third Monday of every month. "Basically, what we do is get together and geek out on music. We listen to really good and really bad music and talk about it."
While dissecting music with some of Denver's finest (Marchant plays in both Widowers and Houses) might sound freakishly intimidating, he says it isn't so. "It's not really a class or anything, but more of a discussion, anything to learn and bounce ideas off of each other."
Marchant releases his latest album this evening at the Meadowlark with A. Tom Collins, John Common and Ashley Raines. And in honor of that, he took some time to answer some questions for us in this week's Localized.

In a sentence, what's your job? Musician/vagrant/semi-homeless person.
What's your favorite place in Denver? My Brother's Bar. I just love to go there and eat, and I love that there's no TV's. It's nice and quiet and a good place to go to have an actual conversation with someone.
What thing/creation/accomplishment are you most proud of? I would say the record that we're working on with Widowers right now. Even though it's not done, I'm already really excited about it. I think it's the coolest thing I've had my hands in yet.
What was the last show (art, music, fashion, theatre, whatever) you saw? I think the last show that I went to would have been The Woodsmen tour kickoff and cd release with Pacific Pride. It was really awesome.
Coors or New Belgium? Absolutely New Belgium! I like the Mothership (Wit Organic Wheat Beer).
Ski or snowboard? Snowboard, although I can't do it anymore because I've hit my head too many times. But I really miss it.
LoDo or SoBro? Absolutely SoBro, because LoDo is a good place to go get called a f@#$% and get your ass kicked, but in SoBro, you can hang out with good people and not have to worry about getting run down by an SUV full of drunken frat boys.
If you weren't doing what you do, what would you be doing? Man, that's a good question ... I'd probably be in a mental hospital.
What's the best meal you've ever had in Denver? It's a tie between a gigantic feast at Sushi Den on my birthday last year and another giant fondue feast at the Melting Pot a couple of years ago.
You have to blow up all of Colorado but one neighborhood. Which do you save? I would say Baker, because a lot of my friends are there. On the flip side, which do you target? Um, shit, Highlands Ranch.
