Matthew Dear is one of the most exciting things to happen to dance music in a long, long time. Under his own name, he's released a series of pop-inflected electronic albums full of excellent songs and clever beats and is gaining a reputation as a top-notch live performer. Under aliases such as Audion, he's issued a series of impressive, floor-filling techno tracks full of innovative sounds and classic, machine-honed rhythms. When he's not busy creating his own masterpieces, he's an in-demand remixer for acts like Hot Chip and the Postal Service. Dear's DJ skills, which can be heard on such efforts as his recent Body Language mix for Get Physical, are impressive as well. On that disc, he weaves threads of minimal techno and the deepest house in a subtly beautiful and always surprising sonic tapestry that sounds great at home and would translate well to any dance floor. Find out for yourself when he visits Beta on Saturday, March 7, for the club's first birthday.
