When you call the first song of your demo "The Band That Was Sad About Something," you're really asking for it, especially when the song itself is as majestically moping as Smashing Pumpkins' Gish or Spacemen 3 on a glucose drip. But is Quadramess the subject of its own song? Is the tune some sort of post-modern analog to Wings' "Band on the Run," or, for that matter, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"? Does solipsism still have a place in rock and roll? Such questions will probably not be answered -- or asked at all -- at the group's show at 3 Kings Tavern on Saturday, March 11. After all, it's kind of hard to think straight with pneumatic blasts of chrome-gilt psychedelia stripping the lining from your brain. The quartet of bassist Chris Pearson, guitarist Devon Rogers, drummer Darren Albert and singer/guitarist Dan Kaufman has some impressive collective credentials, including past stints in such legendary local outfits as Dressy Bessy, the Czars, Jux County and Hemi Cuda, and their gorgeously morose four-song demo is just a warm-up for a full-length due out later this year. Maybe that will make the band in the song cheer up a little bit.
