Black says they'll be spinning a lot of emerging electro artists blowing up on the French scene, from such labels as Kitsuné, Ed Banger and Modular, as well as focusing on the electro house and nu disco that are being dropped in London clubs. "It's sort of a big mix of monstrous bass sounds and nasty dark undertones and squelches," he explains — everything that they feel Denver's major clubs aren't doing. No mash-ups, then, but Black and Trundle will spin remixes and electronica, and they might even drop some pop and hip-hop to appease the ladies. And Black, who's the dance manager at Twist & Shout, also hopes to invite aspiring DJs to guest on the turntables.
Since there'll be no cover charge for Riot! Wednesdays, it'll give Capitol Hill indie kids a chance to mingle with the suburban set.
As one new club night starts, another ends. Jason Heller and Big Al, who've been spinning together for the past four years, have decided to pull the plug on their Saturday Chit Chat nights at the Old Curtis Street Bar (2100 Curtis Street). Recently voted Westword's Best Club Dance Night, the night featured some dyn-o-mite rare grooves, uncut funk and soul. But now Heller and Big Al have passed the torch to members of the Intensifier Sound System. Flounder, DJ P-Nerves and Scott Damnit will be heading up the night — now named Knockout — and spinning Northern soul, boogaloo, surf, garage, psychedelia and reggae.
Finally, Conor Walker and Ed Post have just introduced Under the Mattress Tuesdays at Bender's Tavern (314 East 13th Avenue), where the duo will spin rock, surf, punk, honky-tonk, R&B, rockabilly and a whole lot more.
