Boulder drunks: Cops will be on your case this weekend

Memorial Day may not seem like a party-hearty event -- but it's a three-day weekend on the cusp of summer, which is all the excuse for cutting loose plenty of folks need. With that in mind, the Boulder Police Department wants residents to know exactly what officers will be doing to keep them safe from lushes with wheels: a DUI checkpoint on Baseline Road this Friday and a "saturation patrol" of prime nightlife fun stops.

Get the details after the jump.

Boulder Police Department release:

May 19, 2009 -- Police plan stepped up DUI enforcement over holiday weekend

Boulder police are planning stepped up enforcement aimed at getting drunken drivers off the road over the Memorial Day weekend. A DUI checkpoint will be set up on Friday, May 22, starting at about 9 p.m. on Broadway, just north of Baseline Road. Eleven officers and one supervisor will be working to stop vehicles in this area.

On Saturday, May 23, seven officers and one supervisor will conduct a saturation patrol in the downtown and Hill areas, specifically enforcing driving-related alcohol laws.

The extra staffing has been made possible as a result of $50,000 in Law Enforcement Assistance Fund (LEAF) funds provided by the state of Colorado. This money is dedicated to providing overtime DUI enforcement throughout 2009. The department also received $24,900 in DUI Checkpoint funds. The police department is matching this grant with $7,400 in funds and materials. Officers will conduct five DUI checkpoints during the summer using this allocation.

In addition, the department contributes the $27,646 in DUI enforcement funds.
