Kendrick Marquez, 25, reportedly died trying to prevent 21-year-old Autumn Martinez from driving drunk — and she's now facing multiple charges in regard to the accident that killed him.
But the black eye Martinez sports in her booking photo and the details of what became a fatal collision and the happenings that preceded it suggest that a lot of factors combined to create a needless tragedy.
The incident took place near 8th and Monroe Streets in Monte Vista, a small southern Colorado community. The location is captured in the following interactive graphic. If you have problems seeing the image, click "View Larger Map."
At about 10:22 p.m. on February 15, according to the Pueblo Chieftain, officers of the Monte Vista Police Department were called to a home in the vicinity on a report of a domestic disturbance.
By the time they arrived, Martinez had smashed a car into a tree while Marquez was clinging to the hood.
He's said to have leaped onto the vehicle in an effort to prevent her from driving drunk.
Marquez was critically injured in the crash, and while he was rushed by ambulance to a hospital, Fox31 notes that the facility in question wasn't just around the corner: The San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center is located in Alamosa, sixteen miles away.
He was subsequently pronounced dead as a result of his injuries.
Martinez has been arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide, driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless endangerment, reckless driving and driving with a suspended license, the Chieftain reveals.
What led to the initial police call — and the manner in which Martinez got the black eye — will undoubtedly play a role in her defense. Meanwhile, the investigation continues under the auspices of the MVPD and the Colorado State Patrol.
