Golden Man Stabbed After Suspects Seeking Drugs Go to the Wrong House
Update: The Golden Police Department has just released additional details about the home-invasion stabbing on the 1900 block of Washington Avenue, as well as an absolutely terrifying 911 call related to it; see our previous coverage below.
A department release maintains that "a home invasion in Golden has turned out to be a tragic case of mistaken identity. According to one suspect in custody, he and two other young males broke into a home in the 1900 block of Washington Avenue last night just before 9 p.m. They were expecting to find $10,000 in cash and drugs. However, they went to the wrong house."
The husband and wife who live at the home are middle-school teachers whose two kids were asleep in the basement at the time of the attack; the children weren't harmed in the altercation that took place.
The same can't be said for the male resident. He was stabbed in the kidney and suffered a punctured lung, plus other lacerations. But while he was taken to the hospital in critical condition, he's expected to survive.
So, too, is a male suspect the resident managed to stab after he forced his way into the residence.
At this writing, the GPD has two suspects in custody: two males, ages 21 and seventeen, respectively. Officers remain on the lookout for another male suspect, as well as a female who's thought to have been the getaway driver.
Below, hear the aforementioned 911 call, followed by our previous coverage.
Original post, 8:37 a.m.: The details of a home invasion in Golden last night have been strange since the jump.
And they're only getting weirder.
A homeowner and a suspect were stabbed in the incident — and while a second suspect was busted a short time ago, two others remain on the loose at this writing.
As for the reason the crime took place, police believe the four were looking for drugs, and when they went to the wrong address to get them, the knives came out.
At 9 p.m. on Monday, May 16, according to the Golden Police Department, officers were called to the 1900 block of Washington Avenue, an area captured in the following interactive graphic. If you have problems seeing the image, click "View on Google Maps."
The initial report: Three men had forced their way into the home and were fighting with a male resident.
Upon their arrival, the cops found the resident and a suspect suffering from stab wounds.
Both were rushed to a nearby hospital — the resident in critical condition that required immediate surgery.
The stabbing victim's wife provided additional information about what happened. She told investigators the couple had heard "light knocking" on their door, and when her husband answered it, the three men forced their way inside and began fighting with him.
They were armed with knives, two of which were found at the scene, and possibly a baton.
A perimeter was set up in the area, but the two men, as well as a woman waiting in a car for them, managed to get away.
However, new information obtained by 7News reveals that one person has been arrested thanks to clues found on the wounded suspect's phone — and at last report, authorities believe they know the location of the third male suspect and the identity of the woman.
The GPD adds this theory: The suspects were given the wrong address to pick up drugs — and apparently weren't very happy about it.
Here's a Fox31 report on the crime from earlier this morning.
