Jane Norton more worried about Democrats than Republicans after caucuses

By midnight, former Colorado Speaker of the House Andrew Romanoff had locked up a win over Senator Michael Bennet in Tuesday's caucuses -- but the results were less certain on the Republican side, with senatorial frontrunner Jane Norton in a tighter-than-expected battle with Ken Buck.

Not that you could tell that from the straw poll updates sent throughout the evening by Norton's campaign, all of which showed her winning, albeit in often modestly attended sessions. For instance, all of the attendees at a Denver gathering favored Norton -- but there were only three of them. "Park Hill is hurting for Republicans," Norton spokesman Nate Strauch admitted with a laugh as the witching hour neared. (See a variety of results below.)

Nonetheless, Strauch talked less about Buck during a post-vote chat than he did about the Democrats -- one of whom Norton expects to face come November.

For Norton, Strauch said, the caucuses were "really about the enthusiasm and the great attendance numbers we saw across the state. It's clear the citizens are fed up with Michael Bennet rubber-stamping all of the President's proposals, and they're looking to do something about it."

Strauch wasn't certain how many of the caucus attendees represented Tea Party or 9/12 groups, some of which haven't seemed too enamored with Norton -- although her spokesman begs to differ.

"When we've traveled around the state and spoken to Tea Party and 9/12 groups, the results have been very positive," Strauch stressed. "They've been very responsive."

No matter the preference poll's final tally, "we're not taking anything for granted," Strauch continued. "We didn't take anything for granted going into tonight, and we're not going to take anything for granted moving forward. In fact, if there is a primary, we'll be working hard to make sure Jane's message gets out, and we'll be working hard in November, too."

As for whether Norton would prefer to face Romanoff or Bennet when the final vote gets underway, Strauch insisted that the distinctions they see between each other are much exaggerated.

"Both men represent the same thing, and that's more of the same," he argued. "More big government, more taxes. They're both very liberal ideologically -- and Andrew Romanoff is trying to show himself as even to the left of Michael Bennet. But in terms of differentiation, there doesn't seem like there's much."

The differentiation at caucus meetings was often modest, too. Here's a compendium of positive Norton results, most of which were provided to her campaign by supporters:
