The story of a Boulder County kidnapping over the weekend has gotten considerably stranger since the arrest of Joseph Scott Carter for the crime. During a court appearance yesterday, Carter urged the judge to add "levying war against the United States" to his list of crimes. Turns out he's a former senate candidate and self-proclaimed patriot (as he made clear on his bizarre MySpace page) who was busted last year for publicly threatening a co-worker while wearing chain mail body armor.
About this last incident, the Boulder Daily Camera reports that, in February, Carter was arrested by police in Longmont after he "marched down Main Street in chain mail body armor, a chain mail hood and with several knives on his belt" and shouted "Brad dies tonight!" in reference to a co-worker he blamed for getting him fired from a roadside job selling blankets.
The previous year, Carter registered to run for Senate District 31 as a Republican. According to the Colorado Secretary of State's website, he was also behind an organization called the Colorado Patriot Committee, which raised a grand total of $12 for his cause.
As for his beliefs, they're outlined on a MySpace page still accessible using Google's cache function. On it, Carter describes himself a Los Angeles-born college graduate working as a chef. More recently, he's been identified as a transient, which ties into the first item in his list of interests:
General: in general i come from a blue collar working class background and have lived in denver since i was 16, i also know whats its like to go without things in life like food and other needed survival requirements.
Music: my musical tastes include but are not limitied to heavy metal, celtic and classical.
Movies: i have a prefference for sci-fi movies but love zombie horror films.
Television: don't care much for T.V. as it truely is a wasteland of mindlessness.
Books: adventure and fantasy novels.
Heroes: these days the only people i can idolize as a hero is hiro from the heros series...
Then there's his "About me" biography, in which he outlined his reasons for his senate run. Here's his take on the character of politicians:
It is my view that all persons whom are in any position of authority, are by definition a servant of the public trust and thus must be held to the highest of personal standards concerning their ethical and moral views with regards to the responsibilities vested upon them by the general public.......... To this end these individuals should place more value upon benefit to the general public above, and there for at the forefront of their own agendas and ideals, and upon the onset of any circumstance where the integrity and, character of the person are to be called into question as to honorable and forthright service, that they must consult the general public whereas to come to a consensus as to whether they shall be allowed to continue to serve in trust to the benefit of the general public..........
Later, he took a hard line on crime:
As this aspect is becoming a more and more prevalent circumstance across the nation, I support the idea of work camps for convicted felons with hard labor for sentencing, with no perks or rewards for poor behavior, I also do not support any form of parole for offenders. As to misdemeanors I support involvement with convicted offenders serving time by doing 100 or more hours of community service for all offenses.......... With capitol offenses where life is lost I support the death penalty for across the board even application, with no concern for circumstance if the act was intentional............

At the top of the page, which was last updated in July 2009, Carter declared that he was "planning the battle royale of politics for next october." Now, his fight will be waged in the court system.
Page down to read Carter's MySpace manifesto in its entirety:
About me: I am currently in the running for next years state senate race here in colorado for the 31st senate district. The primary reason i am running is due to the inept and lackluster performance of our current political system and its inability to meet the needs of all the citizens of the state of colorado. some of the thing i know i can do and are not overblown campaign promises or misdirection. Campaign Guarantees I will set up a website or office for the public to vote on measures before the state senate to decide how I will vote on the proposed measure, with residing constituency and local business owners being able to vote once per business or household........... I will always vote for the benefit of the general public if forced to vote on any measure where the district is divided............ I will Demand a vote of confidence at the half way point of my term of office for each election I am elected to serve........... I will propose legislation that reduces fascist agendas and punishes abuses of power by persons in positions of authority (no one is above the law).......... I will pursue an agenda of benefit for the general public and the propagation and expansion of democratic activities by the people and of benefit to the people.......... I will encourage responsible spending of the public's tax revenues, and seek to create budgetary change in whereas the state must have the funds for the budget prior to the creation of the state budget, and not base future budgets on forecasted tax revenues.......... I will propose Legislation that will severely tax companies that ship jobs from U.S. soil and impact the lives of the citizenry of the state and nation because of these actions......... And lastly I will seek to legislate laws that benefit the citizenry and not corporate or private vested interests for the sake of their bottom line.......... Candidate Joseph S. Carter.......... Email: Culinaryinspirations@hotmail.com.......... Political platform Release.......... Character and moral conduct of Political persons: It is my view that all persons whom are in any position of authority, are by definition a servant of the public trust and thus must be held to the highest of personal standards concerning their ethical and moral views with regards to the responsibilities vested upon them by the general public.......... In plain English: If a serious question of real consequence comes forth, the elected person should call for a vote of confidence and heed the vote of the general public.......... Political reform: It is my view that all persons are answerable to the laws of the land and that any laws that are made to benefit select members of government are unjust and thus not needed if they do not benefit the people of the nation as a whole.......... To this end I will seek to end the perks, powers and benefits derived from unjust legislation, that unfairly offers no benefit to the general public, and to utilize the unfair laws of the state against those whom enacted the unfair laws and thus create grounds for future legislators to think about what they are creating and voting for.......... Conscription: I neither support nor oppose conscription as in a trying circumstance such as a major war there may well be a need to conscript the citizenry to help defend the nation and state, but to this end I also seek to ensure all persons must register for any draft, both male and female. This is in an effort to ensure that the people of the nation are equally represented and that no discrimination based solely on gender be allowed.......... Big Government: The idea of large and overly intrusive government is not what the nation was founded upon.......... To end this abomination I will seek to ensure a more moderate government that is of benefit to the general public rather than an overburdening monolith that has no concern for its citizens other than the taxes its revenue service collects........... Also seeing that the current state of the nations federal government is based upon the influence of corporate and private vested interests, my plans would be to seek the removal of these corrupting elements from having any say in government in much the same manner that no religion may be put forth as a state religion and thus no state nor the federal government should be able to promote nor support any corporate entity of any sort at any time for any reason.......... Crime: As this aspect is becoming a more and more prevalent circumstance across the nation, I support the idea of work camps for convicted felons with hard labor for sentencing, with no perks or rewards for poor behavior, I also do not support any form of parole for offenders. As to misdemeanors I support involvement with convicted offenders serving time by doing 100 or more hours of community service for all offenses.......... With capitol offenses where life is lost I support the death penalty for across the board even application, with no concern for circumstance if the act was intentional............ Defense of the State: I fully support all state supported militias and state sponsored military activities that ensure the security of the state against any and all overt or covert military forces, including the forces of the federal government of the United States.......... I also support the idea of liaison officers assigned to local community militias; this is to help ensure these irregular units are prevented from becoming rouge insurgents that can cause serious damage if allowed to operate unchecked............. Drug Use: I oppose any use of illegal or illicit drugs, as drug use is a health issue at best and a scourge on a community at worst, with the specifics of the drugs being used determining the severity of the crime in specific areas. And with that said I support harsh penalties for any person convicted of purchasing or selling any drugs that have not been legislated for general public consumption, by a vote of the general public.......... Education: I feel that all persons within the nation should be entitled to a minimum of an associate's degree that is free of charge in the same manner as a high school diploma.......... Election Reform: It is in my opinion that the nation as a whole is in need of a more open and democratic method of elections for persons seeking any public office.......... As well I seek to ensure that all state election districts are allowed to dictate how the representatives shall vote on behalf of the districts with no independent voting by representatives beyond the need to break a tying vote on any issue with no clear majority being determined........... Also with any appointed replacement of a house member or member of the state senate, which the people of the district that the appointee will represent are allowed to vote as to whether the appointee shall be allowed to assume the vacated seat............ With the recent history of voting issues for Florida I also oppose any and all electronic voting methods............ Energy & the Environment: On this issue only a couple of factors will I consider. 1: what will the cost impact be in concern to the general public.......... 2: what will be the environmental impact over the long term of its use.......... Family: To put this as simply as possible so as to not be misunderstood: I emphatically support the rights of both parents and oppose any legislation that will abridge the legal rights and obligations of either parent and in turn give special rights or privileges to the specific favoring of a mother or father over the other, this is due to having seen many bad parents both mothers and fathers........... Also with the current state of the modern family being what it is, I also will seek to create legislation that will prevent any parent from removing any child they are a parent of, out of state, if that move would prevent the child's other parent from seeing said child, without a court order.......... I will also seek to create legislation that will create penalties for persons whom create children outside of any marriage, with a person whom is married, and then fail to support the children that result from this activity.......... Gambling: I neither support nor oppose any form of gambling as I see this as a personal choice of each individual.......... Corporate involvement in Government: America was founded on the economic principles of the "free enterprise" system. An individual was free to operate his business under the law without government intervention and regulation. This economic system is being replaced by public (government) - private partnerships. This system is called fascism............. To this end I oppose any form of corporate sponsorship or government involvement with corporate entities........... Much as we in this nation favor a separation of church and state, we are also in need of a separation of corporation and state, as corporations are just as divisive as any religious order or faith........... Gun Control: I am only in favor of keeping firearms out of the hands of felons and other undesirable persons, as history has shown if we give up our rights to arm the citizenry we as a state and nation shall end up in the same circumstance as the nation of Germany in the 1930's.......... Healthcare: My view on healthcare is to remove all insurance corporation involvement to ensure a free and balanced healthcare system for all persons, with mandating of more stringent penalties for careless physicians and healthcare professionals, the costs of medical treatment can be reduced to an affordable level for all persons........... A good example is the nation of Cuba, although the nation may be poor and low tech, it still boasts a better healthcare system even though it lacks the modern technology this nation has, and that aspect must change for the nation to move beyond the current over bloated system based on the insurance industries need for capital gain........... Immigration: My view of immigration is based upon how it has affected my life due to the illegal persons who effectively steal employment opportunities from lawful citizens or lawful immigrants.......... Three strike rule for illegal immigrants:.......... 1st. offence: send offender home........... 2nd. offence: five years in prison.......... 3rd. offence: life imprisonment in work camp as state property.......... Now these measures are for illegal migrants, with the following exception, if the person is seeking asylum then they are detained until status is determined, if they are criminal then the person is held to the 2nd and 3rd offences. This is due to the fact I have no issue with any person who is here legally, it is only the illegal persons that should be punished for their actions........... Religious freedom: I believe all persons have a right to worship and follow any belief they choose so long as they do not attempt to force that system of beliefs upon others who do not wish it.......... Or that use that system of beliefs to force an agenda, or to undermine the common good to the general public.......... Taxes: With this topic being a very important and touchy subject in these troubled times it is best to note that more of the tax issues lay within the realm or effective tax code and governmental spending.......... I definitively support tax spending for the general benefit of the public at large, but the subsidizing of large corporate entities that lack economic flexibility I do not support.......... This is due to the fact that big business has always adapted to the changing marketplace, the federal government and state governments have become less responsive to effective strategies in spending and taxation, with more and more taxation done in the business forecasting model, this aspect needs to change to end deficits and to encourage effective spending and budgeting........... With an effective change to having the funding already on hand the state can save on budget cutting and apply funds to any shortfall from past budgets, and thus pay down any debt incurred due to prior taxation methods........... Welfare: While welfare is a necessary evil in these modern times it should not be the end all be all of this society, having been through the system and seeing a serious shortfall of what is promoted and what is received, I can only offer up that it is indeed in need of serious measures to help those who are truly in need and the manner in which the social services are provided.......... National Financial Bailout: It is in my opinion that the national bailout would have better served the needs of smaller more flexible businesses that would have been able to provide more jobs to a larger section of the nation rather than a few large businesses and companies.......... This is due to the fact that even though jobs would have been lost from the larger companies, the ensuing business vacuum would have created ample opportunities for smaller companies to expand and grow in a more natural manner, rather than continue to feed billions of dollars to over bloated monolithic companies that were simply looking for a way for the executives to get their bonuses and perks.......... also keep in mind that this is a state level election so a larger platform is not always a good thing, but if anyone has questions about any issue feel free to ask, and unlike most other candidates i will answer truthfully to real questions...that means no off the wall questions about pointless things..........
Who I'd like to meet: All citizens of colorado who seek real democratic representitive government! compliance contracting has been instituted so the public has absolute insurance that i will comply with my agenda to ensure the public voice will be heard and i will vote exactly the way my district does in the balloting/polling process
