Early Sunday morning, a man was killed at The Beach, a nightclub near Mile High Stadium, and friends are identifying him as Kevie Durham, better known to local hip-hop fans as KL Tha General; read a remembrance of him in our Backbeat blog. Here's the latest about this crime and the search for thus-far-unidentified suspects.

The property has featured a number of other clubs in the recent past. A May 2012 new club alert on our Backbeat blog featured this photo....

...and the following text:

The space at 1630 Federal Boulevard, just behind Sports Authority Field, has changed hands a few times since its former life once upon a time as an outpost for the Fraternal Order of Eagles, including stints as the Endzone and Angel's Sports Bar. While the property has been vacant for more than a year, next Friday, June 1 , the club will re-open its doors as Atmosphere Ultra Lounge and Event Center.

Another switch took place earlier this year. Our listing for the newly christened Beach features more background:

Since Angel's Sports Bar and Restaurant closed in 2009, the space at 1630 Federal -- just behind Sports Authority Field at Mile High -- has gone through several incarnations. After Atmosphere closed in 2013, Jay Bianchi's Dead-centric Donkey OT moved in, and the name soon changed to Dark Star Lounge. In 2014, the Beach took over, turning the place back into a dance club, with bottle service, salsa nights and club nights throughout the week.

The Beach was open for business again last night.

Following the shooting, word began to circulate within the music community that the victim was KL Tha General, a rising figure in the local rap scene. Here's a look at a graphic for one of KL's recordings....

Our Backbeat blog has much more about the life and music of KL Tha General; click to read "RIP KL Tha General: Friends and Fellow Artists Pay Tribute." In the meantime, 7News interviewed music producer Russ P., who stresses that KL Tha General was a peaceful person whose violent death makes no sense.

No arrests have been made as of this writing, and no suspect information has been released. Our condolences to Durham's friends, family and loved ones.
