Maria Rodela identified as victim in murder-attempted suicide witnessed by family (76)
Update: The Denver coroner's office has identified the woman shot to death in view of family members near 44th and Sherman as part of an apparent murder-suicide attempt.
Her name was Maria Rodela, and she was 34 years old; she's seen here in a photo from her Facebook page. She died at the hands of her estranged husband, Genaro Rodela, 37, who subsequently fired a bullet into his own chest. He's expected to survive -- and to face charges related to his wife's death.
According to the Denver Post, the Rodelas married in 1996 and filed for divorce in February of this year. Then, this past Sunday, the couple got into what the coroner's office describes as a "domestic altercation" in front of a house where a family gathering was taking place.
Maria died as a result of not one but two gunshot wounds to the head. And while Genaro remains hospitalized as a result of his wounds, he's under what Denver police term an "investigative hold" -- meaning that even if he become healthy enough for release, he will remain in custody for now.

Original post, 6:43 a.m. May 6: Murder-suicide attempts don't typically happen in front of other people. But the incident that took place last night outside 4404 Sherman Street appears to be an exception to that rule.
A man reportedly shot a woman in full view of nearby family members, then turned the gun on himself. However, he appears to be alive at this writing -- unlike the woman who was struck by the first bullet.
Details, video and a map of the area near the crime scene are all on view below.

Just prior to 9 p.m. last night, according to 7News, the man and the woman were outside the home, near 44th and Sherman, when the former shot the latter.
Afterward, the man put the gun to his chest and fired.
The woman was soon pronounced dead, while the man was rushed to a nearby hospital. At last report, he was in serious but stable condition.
Family members inside the house are said to have seen the whole thing -- every terrible second.
Thus far, neither the dead woman nor the man who killed her have been identified, and their relationship to each other has not been defined beyond the single word used by the DPD above: "involved."
