Mile High Murder, No. 17: Velma Lee Gilbert charged in murder on 1300 block of Xanadu Street

It had been almost a week since the Mile High Murder count moved up -- meaning that there had been no new slayings in the seven-county metro area since the June 10 homicide of Eugene Velarde at the intersection of 17th and Sheridan. Unfortunately, all good things have to come to an end.

Last evening, a man died from a gunshot wound sustained at the 1300 block of Xanadu Street in Aurora, an area captured in a graphic perusable after the jump (if you have problems seeing the image, click "View Larger Map"). A suspect has already been arrested: Velma Lee Gilbert, 48. She's been held without bond on a first-degree murder charge.

NATURE: Homicide Investigation

CASE #: 09-24968

On June 17, 2009 at about 12:40 pm, officers were called to the 1300 block of Xanadu Street on the report of a dispute and subsequent shooting.

Responding officers located an adult male who was shot in the upper body. He was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead at approximately 7:40 PM this evening. His name is being withheld pending notification of relatives.

Major Crime Unit Detectives have arrested:

Velma Lee Gilbert, DOB 8-27-60 of Denver. She will be held in the Arapahoe County Jail pending a 1st Degree Murder Charge. Gilbert is being held without bond at this time.

Detectives continue their investigation into the cause of the shooting as well as the relationships of the parties involved.

There are no anticipated updates prior to mid-day tomorrow.
