Update: Randy Bender's last Facebook profile photo features him posing alongside a gravestone. Now, however, Bender himself is dead, the victim of a shooting at an extended stay motel about which we reported last week; see our previous coverage below.
Police don't believe Bender was a victim of a random crime -- and as you'll see, his Facebook page is filled with posts about people with whom he's had beefs.
At about 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 14, as we've reported, cops with the Lakewood Police Department were dispatched to the Crossland Economy Suites, at 715 Kipling Street, on a report of shots fired.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered a dead man inside room 314. He'd suffered an apparent gunshot wound.
The LPD has now identified the victim as Bender, 34, seen in this driver's license photo.
According to the department, detectives "do not believe the shooting was a random act. They feel that Bender and the suspect(s) were acquaintances." Bender, whose Facebook page lists him as having attended Robert E. Lee High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, shared plenty of aggressive posts over the past few months of his life. Here's one from April, tagged with a winking emoticon and the phrase "feeling ready:"
Play your games while your life goes down the drain cause you put that shit in your veins. Cripple ass nigga don't scAre me none your threats are about lame as your strong hand son . Pay me a visit if you must but believe me bitches I have had enough I won't think twice I won't blink once as I squeeze the trigger easily and watch your burnt brain bust.
In the days and weeks that followed, Bender followed up with three posts on a similar theme:
None ya haters can bring me down try hard and fail every time I promise you that!!!! You may throw a wrench in my shit but I always bounce back and up higher than I started! Get it!!!
My friends are either loyal and good damn people or they are 2 faced only around when there's something in it for them. There's no inbetween....
I will get my shit taken care of cpl people out there I got to make shit right with well one really my nigga knows I got him just a hefty ticket and shits been rough but remember I have been down before I always bounce back and better then before so on that note it's time to get it in. And if u owe me best bet collection time is due you can pay and make it easy or we'll you know how it goes.
His last post, from May 6, was moderately more hopeful but can also be read with sad irony:
Lol it's been different today for sure but not my loss feelings a littke hurt but I will keep on keeping on with or with out any you part timers. I know who my true friends are.
If you have any information about this case, you're encouraged to phone the Lakewood Police Department at 303-987-7111. In the meantime, our condolences to Bender's friends, family and loved ones.
