In January, we told you about the search for a suspect captured in multiple photos distributed following the murder of Agate rancher Ed Butler; see our previous coverage below.

Now, the Elbert County Sheriff's Office is sharing actual video of the man in the hope that someone recognizes him — and the footage shows him casually eating a candy bar while hanging out at the home of the man he's thought to have killed.

As we detail below, Butler was killed on January 23 while checking on property he previously owned. He was talking on the phone with the current resident when he was startled by someone. "What are you doing here?" he asked just before the call was cut off.

When a neighbor rushed to the scene, Butler was already dead of apparent gunshot wounds.

Following the shooting, the sheriff's office posted photos of the suspect on view below. But now, the ECSO has provided 9News with video from inside Butler's trailer showing the man eating the candy bar and spinning in place, among other things.

Sheriff's office reps believe the man may have "some kind of psychosis" that causes him to repeat things in a pattern of three. His behavior also suggests that he's an experienced killer who may have taken lives in the past.

If you recognize the man, you're encouraged to contact the Elbert County Sheriff's Office at 303-674-6745 or 303-660-7500.

Here's the 9News report featuring the video in question, followed by our previous coverage.

Original post, 7:24 a.m. January 26: Ed Butler was a longtime rancher in the small community of Agate — a man known by neighbors as a solid, stand-up guy.

Which is why his murder, which apparently took place while he was in the middle of a cell-phone call, is so shocking.

Now, representatives of the Elbert County Sheriff's Office are circulating photos of a man — he's identified as a single individual, although the pictured individual looks quite different from shot to shot — who's wanted for questioning in the case.

Right now, he's characterized as a person of interest. But the level of interest is subject to change.

At about 5 p.m. on Saturday, January 23, according to the ECSO, law enforcers responded to a residence east of Agate.

The initial report was a burglary in progress — but the crime turned out to be much more serious than that, as is made clear by a 7News piece that fleshes out the sheriff's office account.

According to the station, Butler used to own the property on which the killing took place — and when he saw something amiss there, he phoned the friend now residing there, and for whom he was watching the place.

Butler wanted to know if his pal had given anyone else permission to be there.

After the friend answered in the negative, Butler replied, "Well, I'm going to go in."

Upcoming Events

Once he did so, he was heard asking, "What are you doing here?"

And then the phone went dead.

At that point, the friend called a neighbor, who hurried over to the property — and found Butler dead of apparent gunshot wounds.

Cut to yesterday, when the sheriff's office shared three person-of-interest photos. They include the one at the top of this post, as well as this close-up shot....

The sheriff's office isn't saying where the photos were taken — at least not yet.

Instead, investigators note only that he was seen in the Agate area at approximately 4 p.m. on the 23rd.

The individual in question is thought to wear a "diamond-type earring in his left ear, a band-type ring on his left hand (ring finger), a large watch on his left wrist and possibly a bracelet."

If you have any information about the man, you're encouraged to contact Investigator Mattive at 303-674-6745 or Investigator Heap at 303-947-7033. And if you see the guy, don't approach or contact him. Instead, dial 911.

Our condolences to the friends, family and loved ones of Ed Butler. Look below to see the aforementioned 7News report.
