Video: Freak accident kills SUV driver removing stump from yard, injures 92 year old
The title of the Aurora Police Department news release about an incident that took place on the 1300 block of Scranton Street yesterday reads, "Fatal Traffic Accident."
But this bland label hardly conveys the freakish nature of an incident that left one thus-far-unidentified man dead and nearly took the life of neighbor Frank Vincent, age 92.
It all started when the ill-fated Auroran decided to remove a stump from his yard using his SUV.
At about 10:42 a.m., according to the APD, officers received a call about a rollover accident. When they arrived on the scene, they saw this, as captured in a photo supplied to 7News:

Inside the vehicle, an International Scout, was the gravely injured driver, who was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Vincent, too, was transported to a medical facility, and despite his advanced years, the injuries he sustained are not thought to be life-threatening.
Investigators believe that the gruesome chain of events began with the Scout driver connecting a tow strap to a stump in his yard, then climbing into the vehicle and accelerating.
The idea was that the force would pull the stump from the ground. But instead, the strap's hook came loose and swung back toward the Scout, crashing through its rear window and striking the driver in the back of the head.
The blow may not have killed the man instantly, but he was in no condition to control the SUV, which zoomed across the street in the direction of Vincent, who was sitting on his front porch in a chair that wound up looking like this:
Officers say Vincent was actually hit by the SUV as he tried to get out of its path, making his survival all the more remarkable.
We wish him a speedy recovery and offer condolences to the friends, family and loved ones of a man who was only trying to clean up his yard....
