You can put some food in your face, too; the Liberated Cupcake will be providing complimentary vegan cupcakes to munch on.

"Open and Extensible to Insanely Great; or, What It Could Have Been Like to Use Your Computer" at Counterpath (Friday, free) Counterpath consistently puts on thought-provoking, interesting literary events, and this night promises another one. University of Colorado-Boulder assistant professor Lori Emerson will give a talk entitled "Open and Extensible to Insanely Great; or, What It Could Have Been Like to Use Your Computer" at the space; it's described as uncovering "the cultural and technological shift that made way for contemporary digital interfaces (especially the iPhone/iPad multitouch interface) that are closed off to creative experimentation." Come listen to a different take on the devices that are now so deeply entwined with our culture.

Neal Cassady Birthday Bash at the Mercury Cafe (Friday, free) Celebrate the birth of the man who inspired Jack Kerouac's hero in On the Road tonight with cake, poetry, music and merriment. The annual Neal Cassady birthday bash always brings out crowds to celebrate the Denver man who inspired the Beats. Music legend (and a friend of Cassady) David Amram will be at this special event, offering a musical performance that's definitely not to be missed.

OMGlitter! at Lowbrow Denver (Friday, free) Everything is getting sparkly tonight at Lowbrow, where artist Zach Burk will display his new, glittery art. There will also be music from B.Sue, food trucks, and free drinks and candy. Ride the sugar high while you look at deliciously shimmering art.

Love vs. Hate at Fuel Gallery (Friday, free) Check out a brand-new gallery at the First Friday for Fuel Gallery, 1450 Logan Street. Fuel is opening tonight with a group show entitled Love vs. Hate. The show will feature local artists including Corrina Espinosa, and the theme is guaranteed to get you into the Valentine's spirit early.

Mile High Soul Club at Beauty Bar (Saturday, free) We've endorsed the always awesome, free soul night by DJs Tyler Jacobson, DogBoy and Creeper Steve before. And tonight's version could be even better, because Mile High Soul Club is moving to a space with an even bigger dance floor. The soul, funk and R&B dance party is moving from the Meadowlark to Beauty Bar, so be sure to check out the new digs while you dance the night away.

Screw Your Resolutions at Fado Irish Pub (Saturday, free) Whether you resolved to work out, go on a diet or cut down on drinking at the start of 2013, Fado Irish Pub is urging you to just say "screw it." At this Screw Your Resolutions party, the pub will offer a plethora of ways to indulge in vices -- from complimentary junk food to drink specials. Wear your workout clothes to win prizes at this indulgent party.

The World According to Jazz: Jeff Jenkins at the Denver Central Library (Saturday, free) Fresh City Life's weekend music series continues this Saturday with a special performance from Jeff Jenkins. The talented jazz pianist has worked with plenty of musical greats over the years, and at this afternoon show he'll combine jazz with pop, rock and world music.

Football Free at the Mercury Cafe (Sunday, $5-10) If you want to hang out at a place where the Super Bowl will not rule, retreat into the cozy Mercury Cafe for a night free of football. You can take a Jitterbug and Lindy Hop class for $10, and at 8 p.m. the Raucous and Wild Poetry Slam will get started; admission is just $5. See a more creative competition that doesn't involve dudes in helmets at this anti-sports evening.

Crafting with Kitty at Kitty Mae Millinery & Accessories (Sunday, free) Get crafty on Sunday with other people who'd rather create art than watch football. Kitty Mae will supply glue guns for this fun crafts party; bring materials to share and snacks if you'd like them. Hang out, create something, and be blissfully ignorant to the score.
