Fast Forward Release Party at Mercury Café (Friday, free) Flash fiction might not be the post popular form of literature, but it should be. The premise is simple, self-contained, very short stories that don't top a word count higher than 1,000. If that sounds like your cup of tea, then you really need to pick up the new issue of Flash Forward, a literary magazine dedicated to all things flash fiction from the big to the small. Tonight will also feature plenty of readings from the authors in the collection, a contest and more.Lipgloss at La Rumba (Friday, $5) We haven't mentioned Lipgloss in a while, so consider this just a gentle reminder that it's one of the best (and cheapest) dance nights in town. If you need to shake off a rough week by swinging you booty, this is the spot to be.
T. Rex Encounter at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science (Friday-Sunday) You'll need to be a student or senior to get in to the museum for under $10 on Friday or Saturday but on Sunday, museum admission is free. What is the T. Rex Encounter? It's robotic dinosaurs and an entirely interactive exhibit. Seriously, if there is anything cooler out there right now, we've never heard of it.
Down & Derby at Exdo Event Center (Friday, $5-$10) You'll want to RSVP ahead of time to guarantee cheap entry and skates, but once you do, there will be plenty to do at Down & Derby. It won't just be some super-fun skating around, it will also packed with a pop-up shops, food trucks, dancing and disco. R! Series Look at the Sky Photography at Marion Street Tattoo and Gallery (Friday, free) Photographer Randall Paetzold covers a lot of bases with his photography, so if you're a fan of still images of any sort, you'll likely find something to fall in love with. Better yet, if you've got more than a few bucks on hand, you'll probably be able to walk away with some art, as everything should be priced reasonably.Vine Street Pub & Brewery Block Party at Vine Street Pub (Saturday, free) Like any good block party, there are far too many activities to list here, but know this, if you hit up the Vine Street Block Party, you won't be wonting for things to do. The day includes a tricycle relay race, comedians and blindfolded grain-bag sacking, just to name a few. There will of course be tons of good food, beer and music as well.
Firefly Handmade Gypsy Market at Boulder Junction (Saturday, free) Just like all the handmade markets here in Denver, Boulder is getting into the game and providing a place for artists and creatives to sling their homemade goods. You might want to bring more than ten bills if you want to snatch up more than a few things, but being handmade also typically means you can score stuff on the cheap.
Meet Mack the Knife at Aurora History Museum (Sunday, free) Negro League baseball player Mack "The Knife" Pride will be at the Aurora History Museum today to speak about his time in the league and answer questions about his history. On display at the museum will also be plenty of baseball related knick-knacks from the era as part of the Pride and Passion: The African-American Baseball Experience.6th Annual Pancake Breakfast and Bike Ride at Pablo's Coffee (Sunday, $7) There's only one time a year when you can score unlimited pancakes, coffee and sausage for only seven bucks and that's the Pablo's Pancake Breakfast. Food's not the only thing on the menu though, a bike ride from Salvegetti to the event will start things off, and once you're there, you'll be able to take part in a prize raffle and toss the kids around in the bouncy castle. It's for charity too, the profits will go to The African Community Center and SAFI.
