Fans of the Art Students League of Denver’s annual Summer Art Market still think of it as their little secret. Now in its 24th year, the fest has grown to include work by nearly 300 artists, all local, who run the gamut from emerging to professional. There’s music and food, artist demonstrations and activities for kids — all free — in a laid-back neighborhood, and bargains abound. Kick back at the Summer Art Market and support your local artists.
Stephen Batura: A Reservoir of Occurrences

Admission: $18.50 (free for children ages twelve and under with a parent or guardian)
Painter Stephen Batura, known for his large, evocative paintings based on the turn-of-the-last-century imagery of Denver photographer Charles Lillybridge (who captured everything from everyday life to massive train wrecks using early photography methods), gets a big show focused on this ongoing body of work at the CSFAC. That alone is well worth the drive to Colorado Springs, but there’s more — All New Women, a unique exhibit that juxtaposes the portraits of John Singer Sargent with works from contemporary photographer Cindy Sherman’s Society Portraits series. Make a day of it and drive south!

Emmanuel Gallery opens its walls to graffiti with a summer show bringing local and national spray-can geniuses Taste, Pisto, El Marsito, East, Charlie Doves and others indoors for a display of their in-the-moment street-writing prowess. DJ Mimi Masala will provide the beats at the opening, and hip-hop dancers from Denver’s Bboy Factory will perform.
