Imagine learning to play an instrument, assembling a band with total strangers, writing music together and performing it in front of a live audience — all in less than a week. This is what the young women of Girls Rock Denver do each summer, and today you can witness the result of their hard work, at the fifth annual Girls Rock Denver 2013 Camper Showcase.

A camp run completely by volunteer musicians and other women active in the creative community, Girls Rock Denver aims to teach girls how to play music while building self-esteem and a sense of inclusion in a still-male-dominated industry. And this showcase of brand-new bands and original songs is for everyone to see — not just the parents of campers.

“It’s about demonstrating that as a community, we support girls taking chances and being creative and being more than just spectators in the rock-and-roll arena,” says Girls Rock Denver director Katie Rothery.

The Girls Rock Denver 2013 Camper Showcase begins at 2 p.m. at the Oriental Theater, 4335 West 44th Avenue. Tickets are $5 at the door, with proceeds going to next year’s camp. For more information on the camp and the showcase, visit girlsrockdenver.org.
