"We're excited that the upcoming December 18 release of Anchorman 2 is letting us turn the spotlight on some of the best films about journalism and the people who make the news," says programming director Keith Garcia. "We think we've put together a nice sampling of films that portray this exciting career," he continues, apparently unaware that films make journalism seem exciting by glossing over the decidedly uncinematic tedium of fact-checking and copy-editing.
The series kicked off December 2 with the only tangentially journalistic Superman, then classed things up considerably with Citizen Kane. Garcia intentionally covers a wide swath of eras and genres, from bleak classics like Sweet Smell of Success and thrillers like Zodiac to more lighthearted popcorn fare. "We cover a broad scope," says Garcia, "including the thrills of All the President's Men." That movie that follows the reporters who broke the Watergate scandal screens at 7 p.m. tonight, December 4.
Garcia is also looking forward to the crowds and "fun of our Newsies Sing-Along on December 6," but is most excited "by our two television entries with Network and Broadcast News. Two films that not only get to the heart of the television news world, but did it with such gusto and memorable screenplays," he says.
"It's not often that this particular subgenre of films gets to screen together," Garcia concludes. "So I hope folks will take the time to come check them out while the watching is good!"
