Registered cyclists (sign up here) can fuel up between 6:30 and 9 a.m. today courtesy the Denver Department of Public Works. Contributing vendors include King Soopers, Starbucks Coffee, Good Times, Salba Smart, Goodnessknows, Blue Bell Ice Cream, Honest Tea and Watercourse Foods.
In addition to free bike tune-ups from Park Hill Bike Depot and stands for local cycling organizations like PeopleForBikes, the Civic Center Park kickoff will feature Governor John Hickenlooper and Mayor Michael Hancock speaking between 7:35 and 8 a.m.
"The Civic Center Bike to Work Day event celebrates the progress that staff, leaders, advocates and community members of the City and County of Denver, along with the region, have made and continue to make in transforming Denver into a world-class bicycle community," says Nancy Kuhn, interim director of marketing and communications for the Denver Department of Public Works, who notes that her department is implementing fifteen new miles of bike lanes annually, and currently planning the construction of a pedestrian and bike bridge across I-25 to the Colorado Center and light rail station.
"It is a way for us to celebrate cycling in Denver and encourage people to bike to work," she adds, "while also providing an opportunity to reflect on the previous year's successes and upcoming projects."
And the reflection could get raucus at the end of the day, when Skyline Park (in the 1500 block of Arapahoe Street) hosts a party from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. with New Belgium beer, live music by The Reals, and a a commuter fashion show by Primal, as well as games and contests.
