Maia Stone, executive director of Colorado Creative and founder of the Giving T.A.B.L.E. (Teen Arts & Business Leadership Experience) program, wants to see new opportunities for young artists in Five Points and decided to start as close to home as possible: Tonight at 5 p.m. she's unveiling a new mural she commissioned artist Luis Contreras to paint on the side of her house at 797 28th Street. Contreras is the resident muralist at Stone's new non-profit arts program for Denver teens in Five Points, and Stone says she hopes his vivid colors come to represent the ongoing revitalization of her neighborhood.
"The whole idea is to stimulate economic development through the arts with a focus on the revitalization of Five Points," Stone says. "So we figured we'd start with our own home." The official unveiling ceremony is tonight and is open to a limited number of guests; to RSVP email [email protected].
Stone says she's hoping to use the event to generate interest for her Building Tables $52.80 fundraiser next week, November 2, 6-9 p.m. at the Fuel Cafe, which will feature art by Contreras and painter Angel Espino, and performances by jazz singer Zanya Laurence and slam poet Theo "Lucifury" Wilson."All funds raised from this event will benefit the Giving T.A.B.L.E. ~ Teen Arts and Business Leadership Experience and the launch of our Summer of 2012 with the Five Points Youth Art Program - smART Kicks, a free community-based art and entrepreneurship program for youth ages 6-18," Stone says.
