During the military coup that rattled Argentina for seven years, beginning in 1976, Esquivel bravely chose to edit the newsletter for the Peace and Justice Service, alerting the world to the situation in Argentina. Before too long, Esquivel "disappeared" a casualty of the government's policy of dealing with protesters. But the world took notice; Esquivel was returned to his home after fourteen months, due to the efforts of Amnesty International, and in 1980 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his willingness to speak out in a culture of silence.
Hear Esquivel speak out again tonight at 6 p.m. at the Central Presbyterian Church, 1660 Sherman Street. Tickets are $20 to $25 and all proceeds benefit PeaceJam; for information, call 303-455-2099.
