From a young age, Adolfo Perez Esquivel was taught to respect nature and the world around him; as an artist, his large-scale murals and sculptures grace parks and museums throughout Europe and Latin America.

During the military coup that rattled Argentina for seven years, beginning in 1976, Esquivel bravely chose to edit the newsletter for the Peace and Justice Service, alerting the world to the situation in Argentina. Before too long, Esquivel "disappeared" a casualty of the government's policy of dealing with protesters. But the world took notice; Esquivel was returned to his home after fourteen months, due to the efforts of Amnesty International, and in 1980 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his willingness to speak out in a culture of silence.
