Pat McCullough, the man behind Celtic Events, first heard Great Big Sea at Red Rocks, when the musical group opened for another act. “When you hear the band play Newfoundland accordion music and sea chanteys, you initially scratch your head,” admits McCullough. “But in order to pull it off, you have to be great musicians, and they are a really talented bunch of people. They do what they do, and they don’t offend the traditionalists, and for people who are more inclined to contemporary sounds, they’re able to fulfill that, as well. They’re able to make everybody happy, if you will.”

Singer and multi-instrumentalist Alan Doyle will join the band on stage tonight at the Boulder Theater, 2032 14th Street in Boulder. (Doyle can also be seen on the silver screen, in Ridley Scott’s upcoming version of the Robin Hood tale, starring Russell Crowe and featuring Doyle on the lute in Robin’s band of merry men.) Great Big Sea plays tonight and tomorrow night at 8 p.m.; tickets are $29.50 to $35. Call 303-786-7030 or visit www.bouldertheater.com.
