With the inflated set of societal expectations that accompanies them, holidays in general can be a setup for disappointment, and Valentine’s Day is probably the worst. On no other day can a bouquet of roses smell so suspiciously of desperation; even if you have a special someone, you spend the night just trying not to choke. And if you’re single, enjoy your now-acute loneliness. Thanks, Hallmark.

If greeting-card companies brought this suffering upon us, then Art Salon is offering a fitting antidote tonight, when the salon hosts Scorned Lover Valentine Card Making, when you can create a message that’s a little less cutesy than the general fare. “It’s a sugary-sweet holiday,” notes Jennifer Mosquera, painter, Art Salon owner and the woman who will be running the workshop. “I wanted to add a little salt to it.” She’ll provide the space and supplies — things like card stock, glitter glue, markers, pens and rubber stamps with such slogans as “Eat Shit And Die” — and you just provide your own bitter disenchantment.

If you’re looking for something a little more potent, tomorrow Mosquera will host You Do Voodoo, at which scorned lovers can make voodoo dolls and use them to cast hexes, just in case the cards don’t work. The card workshop is $15 (which includes materials for two cards), and the voodoo session is $25 (that price includes “voodoo doll kits” that Mosquera makes herself); both are at Art Salon, 2219 East 21st Avenue, from 6 to 8 p.m. The workshops repeat on February 8 (cards) and 9 (dolls).
