Fans of both Jane Austen and musicals should be thrilled that the Denver Center Theatre Company is launching the world premiere of Sense and Sensibility: The Musical tonight. The novel, which follows the Dashwood sisters — Elinor and Marianne — as they fall in love and out of love and in love again, was the first Austen published and remains one of her most popular works to this day.

But how does it work as a musical? “The music is not operatic,” notes assistant director/choreographer/cast member Josh Walden, “but it’s so grand and beautiful — yet very accessible. Nothing about this material feels archaic or stuffy.

“It’s Jane Austen, but they’ve found a way to write this piece that really connects to a modern audience while staying true to Austen and the world that she created,” he adds. “Everything is so perfectly placed. The actors in our production are so talented, and they’re perfect for each character.”

Sense and Sensibility runs through May 26 at the Stage Theatre in the Denver Performing Arts Complex; tickets, $55 to $65, are available at denvercenter.org or by calling 303-893-4100.
Fridays, Saturdays, 7:30 p.m.; Saturdays, Sundays, 1:30 p.m.; Tuesdays-Thursdays, 6:30 p.m.; Sun., May 26, 6:30 p.m. Starts: April 5. Continues through May 26, 2013
