How'd the season get away so fast? If you haven't made it to this year's gorgeous Zoo Lights display at the Denver Zoo, you have a tiny reprieve in the nascent new year: It's tonight or never, because tomorrow, the lights will shut off until next December. So round up the family (already bored with new toys and the receding holiday buzz) and take a temporary trip to wonderland. From 5 to 9 p.m., there will be plenty to do, aside from the expected wide-eyed wandering through a nighttime jungle of leaping springboks and jumping dragons (the display comprises a whopping 38 acres of lights, including 150 animated animal sculptures). In the new Toyota Elephant Passage, an Asian-inspired Festival of Lanterns will light up the night, and a Celebration Pavilion features nightly cultural performances every half-hour from 6 to 9 p.m.; many indoor animal exhibits are open for night viewing, and young hands can also be kept busy at a lantern-making Creation Station.

Find the Denver Zoo at 2300 Steele Street in City Park; Zoo Lights admission is $6 to $10 (children ages two and under admitted free). For information, go to www.denverzoo.org/events; the tech-savvy can text “dzoo” to 56512 for the night's most up-to-the-minute schedule and special offers.
Nov. 30-Jan. 2, 5-9 p.m., 2012
