"One of my pet peeves is when playwrights and producers and directors don't give the audience credit for their intelligence. They don't think the audience has the capacity to embrace unfamiliar characters; they dumb everything down," says Luccian Lajoie, writer and star of the new locally produced play, Date* Interviews With Real People About Internet Dating.

The multimedia nonfiction comedy assembles a series of interviews that Lajoie conducted with over 150 subjects on the subject of online romance -- "old, young, gay, Mormon, Jewish, I tried to cover a broad spectrum" -- which were then written into monologues and filmed by local actors. While Lajoie is the lone actor on the stage, telling her own personal story of online matchmaking, the filmed monologues will be projected behind her, adding punctuation and spice to Lajoie's narrative.

Date* premieres tonight at 8 p.m. and runs through May 12 at Off Center @ the Jones, in the Denver Performing Arts Complex. For tickets, $16, and more information, visit www.datetheplay.com.
Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m. Starts: April 20. Continues through May 12, 2012
