Since the invention of the cell phone, horror films have struggled with plausibility, but you need look no further than the independent circuit to find innovation in the genre. With last year’s inaugural Mile High Horror Film Festival, executive director Timothy Schultz was hoping to start something big in town with independent horror, and he appears to have succeeded, because this year’s fest has doubled in size and scope.

“We’ve got two screens, celebrities coming in, and even a panel discussion,” says Schultz. “We’ll also have Colorado film premieres for two films that have seen a lot of buzz, Chillerama and The Woman.” Along with celebrities such as Michael Berryman (The Hills Have Eyes, Evil Spirits), who will be receiving a lifetime achievement award, the festival will showcase more than thirty short and feature-length horror films from eleven countries. It will also close with a ceremony on Sunday, where awards will be handed out.

The Mile High Horror Film Festival kicks off today at the Starz FilmCenter, 900 Auraria Parkway; admission is $75 for an all-access weekend pass, or $9 for individual screenings. For tickets and a full schedule, visit www.milehighhorrorfestival.com.
