The story of Colfax is one of transportation evolution. First a trade route and then a trolley line, the avenue gained much of its current-day fame with the rise of automobiles in the 1940s and ’50s. Rolling Route 40: The Hubcap Art Show celebrates that history by using hubcaps as a medium for a unique multi-venue exhibition in the 40 West Arts District in Lakewood.

"This show really speaks to the character and history of Colfax through car culture, but we also wanted to give everyone the same starting point of a canvas," says 40 West's Julie Byerlein of the theme. Dozens of artists, including painters, sculptors and collage artists, were invited to participate in the open-to-all show. Their creations will be for sale by the artists and judged pre-show by venerable artist and Pirate Gallery co-founder Phil Bender, who will honor a handful of entries with awards of excellence.

Various events -- including a classic-car show and a meet-and-greet with Colfax legend Hubcap Annie tomorrow at 40 West Gallery, 1560 Teller Street in Lakewood -- are all part of this monthlong celebration. Rolling Route 40 begins today and goes through June 28 as part of the Lakewood INSPIRE Arts Week. Hubcaps will be displayed at various locations in the 40 West Arts District; for more information on participating locations and events connected to the show, visit 40westarts.org.
Fri., June 6, 4-6 p.m.; Tuesdays, Thursdays, 1-4 p.m. Starts: June 6. Continues through June 28, 2014
