The final phase of a three-phase construction project, giving South Broadway some more appealing aesthetic touches between Arizona and Yale avenues, was just completed. To celebrate the end of this seemingly endless facelift, Mayor Michael Hancock, Councilman Chris Nevitt and Denver Public Works Manager Jose Cornejo joined together to plant the last tree of the project on the northeast corner of Yale and South Broadway last Thursday.

"For generations, this has been a street that has been beat up and neglected," proclaimed Nevitts, who represents the area. "Broadway, in Denver, is going to be worthy of the name. We're making Broadway what it should be." "We're here to celebrate the new enhancements that are going to make this area more beautiful," said Hancock. "And today a better drainage system is amongst the improvements of this rejuvenated seventeen-block roadway, and we're excited to alleviate this area of the flooding."

This portion of South Broadway had a reputation for flooding during bad rainstorms. So in addition to adding new foliage along this strip, two stormwater outfalls were created at Asbury and Florida avenues to prevent flooding.

The celebration included live performances. But for most of the businesses along Broadway, which have suffered through months, even years, of disruption, just knowing the work was finally done was entertainment enough.
