Graphics have been an important part of snowboard culture from the beginning, and lately, they've been elevated to high art, with most board companies employing full-time art directors and contracting with A-list artists.

Today the Design Within Reach Denver Studio, 2500 East Second Avenue, Suite 120, hosts the fourth annual Design the Modern Board Contest from 6 to 9 p.m., featuring the work of more than fifty budding modernist artists who will submit to the mercy of a democratic vote to determine the Best in Show. The winner gets bragging rights and a one-off Never Summer snowboard featuring their design.

"It's a fun one because you never know what to expect," says Seth Ehrlich, development director for SOS Outreach, a local nonprofit that helps introduce 4,500 young people to winter sports annually. "You'll see a huge cross-section of designs from people with very different design backgrounds and very different approaches to snowboarding, and you never know what the winning design is going to be.

A $12 donation at the door gets you a ticket for the prize raffle, tunes from DJ Chonz, snacks from Wahoo's Fish Taco and refreshments from Mondo Vino and Red Bull. Some of the money also benefits SOS Outreach, which relies on fundraisers like this to generate awareness for its programs. “On our end, it's been a great partnership with Design Within Reach, and we're very excited to partner with Never Summer this year for the first time,” Ehrlich says.
