Seen at 5 Green Boxes: How much is that owl in the window?

The South Pearl Street boutique 5 Green Boxes, the recipient of Westword Best of Denver kudos for its wonderful window displays, has long carried the socially conscious brand Toms Shoes, the comfy cloth footwear that comes in a rainbow of colors and designs. And there's an inner beauty to Toms, too: Every pair of shoes you buy subsidizes a donated pair for a child in need in a developing country.

But now another hallmark of Toms has inspired a new exhibit at 5 Green Boxes. When an employee told owner Charlotte Elich that the cardboard inserts inside the shoes reminded her of owls, the current window display idea -- Wise Ol' Owl -- was born.

A call went out to both loyal customers and anyone with with a creative flair to turn their shoe inserts into a work of owlish art -- and the response was spectacular, in part because entrants could compete to win a new pair of Toms. Lisa Holowinski, whose gorgeous owl is pictured above, took the honors for going above and beyond to create an owl of most artful stature.

The owl menagerie has been up in the store's window all month; you can still catch it through May 10, when the owls will migrate (or whatever it is that owls do) to make way for a new display. But if you can't make it to the actual shop, look on:
