Ian Robert McKown got kind of tired of the 24x30-inch canvases that are often used for artwork, so he invited his friends -- and anyone else who wanted to participate -- to think inside a 3x3-inch box.

“The idea is that, ‘you may be a fine artist, you may be a great artist, but once you have to go smaller with the surfaces, then the actual paintings -- or renderings, or whatever media you’re using -- become a lot harder,” he says.

That’s the theme behind Minikin Madness--Rad Art on Small Surfaces, which features 150 to 200 pieces, all done on surfaces that are three by three inches or smaller. The majority of the submissions for this all-inclusive show come from the U.S., but some come from as far away as as Turkey, Ireland, the U.K. and Sweden.

“It’s going to be a big offering and from a wide range of backgrounds, influences, artists,” McKown says. “We end up with something that isn’t just, say, a show on abstract work; it’s a show on whatever. And it’s going to be a lot more fun and a lot more interesting, I think, than a traditional show.”

Minikin Madness opens tonight at 6 p.m. at Boxcar Gallery, 554 Santa Fe Drive, and runs through Sunday. Admission is free. Go to the Minikin Madness Facebook page for more information.
