There might still be sawdust in the air at the future Bradford Washburn American Mountaineering Museum in Golden, but in the meantime, the museum's Base Camp gift shop is open for business at the American Mountaineering Center, 710 10th Street, just in time for the holiday season. High-country-lovin' folks who missed the Colorado Mountain Club's Mountain Fest this past weekend (see Saturday, page 32) will be happy to know they can still pick up gifts for fellow outdoor enthusiasts at the brand-new store, which specializes in official products from the museum's partnering organizations, including the CMC, the American Alpine Club and the National Geographic Society.

That would include everything from fair-trade crafts imported from mountainous regions and mountaineering books by local authors to stuffed toys of Colorado animals and sterling silver jewelry with a climbing theme. And the money spent in the gift shop will help fund the museum, which will be the only venue of its kind in the nation. "We'll cover the subject of mountaineering completely, from aesthetic, scientific and exploratory points of view," notes director Niña Johnson. The BWAMM is scheduled to open in February 2008 with a traveling show on the Arctic, national speakers and permanent exhibits on the complete history of high-altitude mountaineering, from Himalayan summits to our own Colorado fourteeners.

Base Camp is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; call 303-996-2743, ext. 103.
