Traditional science and science fiction don’t always play well together. More often than not, science-fiction films break the rules of reality in service of the narrative. Regardless, the two are intertwined, and over the next five weeks, the Denver FilmCenter and the Museum of Nature & Science will bring them together for the Sci-Fi Film Series.

“Films allow us to look at different possibilities,” says DMNS adult-programs manager Liz Davis. “It’s a fun way to talk about science.” The series will bring in scientists to talk about five films — Children of Men; Alien; 2001: A Space Odyssey; Moon; and Gattaca — over the course of five weeks. Each night, a different scientist will introduce a film, with Q&A periods following the screenings for anyone looking to dig a little deeper.

The Sci-Fi Film Series kicks off tonight at 7 p.m. at the Denver FilmCenter, 2510 East Colfax Avenue, and runs every Wednesday through August 10 at either the FilmCenter or the museum’s Phipps Theater, 2001 Colorado Boulevard.
