Denver's a great place for fans of the big five of genre film (that's sci-fi, fantasy, horror, exploitation and cult), as every week we get a generous helping of selections to choose from. As usual, we're rounding up your options for the weekend to come and the following week, and making a recommendation of one can't-miss film. This week, we're going to kick Wolfman in the nards.

Pick of the Week: Monster Squad Where: Starz FilmCenter, Tivoli building on the Auraria Campus When: 10 p.m. Friday, October 1, and Saturday, October 2 Why?: Monster Squad is a legitimate cult classic. It's a kid's adventure movie that pays homage to the Universal movie monsters. It's fun, funny and entertaining as hell. If you head down Friday night, there's a Monster Mash preparty (starting at 8:30 p.m.) with free pizza and beer. Better yet for fans of the film, star Andre Gower will be appear in person both nights to introduce the film, sign memorabilia and answer any questions you might have (like yes, the wolfman does have nards). The Shining Where: Esquire Theatre, 600 Downing Street When: Midnight Friday, October 1, Saturday, October 2 Why?: Well, because it's The Shining, arguably one of the best horror movies ever made. Purists might not place it among director Stanley Kubrick's best work, but it's a solid, scary adaptation of one of Stephen King's best novels, plus it's set (but not filmed) in Colorado! Brighton Rock Where: Starz FilmCenter, Tivoli building on the Auraria Campus When: 7 p.m. Tuesday, October 5, and Wednesday, October 6 Why?: Noir isn't one of the genres we typically cover, but these days it's easy enough to just fold the whole genre into "cult," so go with it. This one stars Richard Attenborough in his breakthrough role as a psychotic youngster named Pinkie in a black-as-night tale of crime and lowlifes in a jaunty British seaside tourist trap. Case 39 Where: The Landmark Theatre Greenwood Village When: Opens Friday, October 1 Why?: This Renée Zellweger vehicle about a social worker who rescues a child from abusive parents, only to learn the child might not have been the one who needed rescuing, has garnered generally terrible reviews and lackluster repsonse from audiences. Still, if you're in the mood for a new bad seed/demon kid flick, this could be just the thing! But probably not. More info/Tickets: LandmarkTheatres.com
