It's Presidents' Day, and if you're lucky, you won't even have to play hooky to take advantage of the SFCD Free Day at the Denver Botanic Gardens. And if at first the idea sounds tinny to you in the dead of winter, remember that the DBG can be quite cozy -- and fully abloom -- in its torrid and beautiful Boettcher Memorial Tropical Conservatory, Orangery and Marnie's Pavilion displays.

It's also the last day to gaze at the more than 200 flowering orchids gracing the Orangery's Orchid Showcase, and if you're an active enthusiast, DBG orchid doctors and members of the Denver Orchid Society will be manning an information table, answering all questions. What else? In a nod to the season, Yes to Carrots, a manufacturer of natural body and skin-care products and the DBG's spring sponsor, will be handing out free lotion samples to garden-goers.

So much free. Such a deal! Make it a day by adding lunch at the Offshoots cafe and a stop in the always-hot Shop at the Gardens, which you can hit on your way out. Visit the gardens, 1007 York Street, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; find out more at www.botanicgardens.org or call 720-865-3500.
Mon., Feb. 20, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., 2012
