MCA Denver is hosting a rare treat for art enthusiasts tonight. Legendary artist Christo will present a lecture on his controversial work-in-progress, Over the River — for which he hopes to drape portions of a forty-mile stretch of the Arkansas River in a translucent fabric — in conjunction with the current MCA exhibit, Over the River: A Project for the Arkansas River, State of Colorado. The project itself has been in the planning stages for just shy of twenty years and has yet to be given final approval from the federal government. Christo and his late partner, Jeanne-Claude, have been wrapping objects since the 1960s and are responsible for monumental and ephemeral fabric artworks incorporating islands, coastlines, bridges and massive historical buildings throughout the world, to impressive effect. The exhibit continues at the MCA through January 16, 2011.

A reception with drinks and hors d’oeuvre starts the evening at 6 p.m. That will be followed at 6:30 by Christo’s lecture and a moderated question-and-answer session.

“On top of that, you’ll be able to attend the museum on the same ticket before or after the talk, where you can view the drawings of the proposed project,” says Erin Roberts, executive assistant in the MCA’s Department of Fabrications.

Tickets are $10 for members and $15 for non-members; there are 290 seats available, and the event is expected to sell out. The talk will take place at the Flower Garage, across from the MCA at 1430 Delgany Street; for information and tickets, call 303-298-7554 or visit www.mcadenver.org.
