“Coffee’s not what you think it is,” says Brandon Loper, director of >A Film About Coffee, a new documentary about the ubiquitous beverage screening tonight at the Mayan Theatre. Moving from the places where coffee’s grown to the places where it’s served and all points in between, Loper’s film examines the work, the resources and the passion that go into making a perfect cup of joe.

“This thing you take for granted, a cup of coffee, there’s a lot of work that goes into it, and a lot of faces behind it,” he explains. “I’ve focused the lens on different parts of the story that you might not have thought about before, and the parts that I thought were polarizing. You’ll walk away with a really grand appreciation. A lot of people have said the coffee they drink the next morning is different after watching the film.”

See the film and enjoy some complimentary coffee at 6:30 p.m. at the Mayan, 110 Broadway. Loper and local coffee expert Darrin Daniel will be on hand for a post-screening Q&A. For tickets, $15, and more info, visit afilmaboutcoffee.com.
