Brilliant from the start, Buntport Theater’s “live comic book,” Trunks, turns children’s theater on its nose by acknowledging the cyber-savvy wit of the modern kid and inviting the ’rents and everyone else to join in the delicious fun. And the literary thread of Trunks — each episode is based on a book chosen by the audience at the previous show — gives it “educational” cachet, to boot. The inside joke, then, is that Trunks plays to more than the peanut gallery: It’s smart, silly and in tune with the world, and it’s coming to an end.

You read right: The eighth and final season of Trunks, a show many kids have literally grown up with, contnues today with shows at 1 and 3 p.m., though team spokeswoman Jessica Robblee says it’s not because anyone’s tired of it. “We’re only ending the series in order to build a new project, so it’s a happy story,” she notes.

That means we can all expect this to be the Trunks season of all seasons — one that includes a celebration of the serial’s 100th episode on December 15 and a three-part grand finale beginning in January. “It’s a really big moment for the series and for us,” Robblee says. “We’re going to be bringing back a lot of guest stars from past years — about 102 that we can count — and we’d love to make the year a real celebration of community, superheroes and comedy...because that’s what this has meant to us.”

Trunks runs bi-monthly at Buntport, 717 Lipan Street, through February 9; admission ranges from $5 to $7, with a $1 discount offered to all who appear at the box office dressed like a superhero. Visit www.buntport.com or call 720-946-1388.
