With this round of the University of Colorado’s annual Arts and Culture Week, Boulder is getting a special treat: the national premiere of Nine Nation Animation, a program of nine animated shorts from around the world. “It was curated and put together by Jonathan Howell, whose day job is working for New Yorker Films,” says International Film Series director Pablo Kjolseth. “This is very, very rare. We’re even beating New York, which is unheard of. Here in Boulder, we tend to be pretty far down the rung.”

The program brings short, animated films from countries ranging from the United Kingdom to Croatia, Sweden, South Africa and beyond. The films themselves cover subjects as diverse as construction workers discussing life and matchsticks working together to enjoy a cigarette. Most are festival prize winners, including the Belgian film Flatlife, which won a 2004 Jury Prize for Best Short Film at Cannes.

You can catch these shorts at 7 and 9 p.m. tonight and tomorrow at Muenzinger Auditorium on the CU campus. Tickets are $6, but all card-carrying CU students can see films for free as part of Arts and Culture Week. For more info, visit www.internationalfilmseries.com or call 303-492-1531.
Thu., Sept. 23, 7 & 9 p.m.; Fri., Sept. 24, 7 & 9 p.m., 2010
